How to Transport Cakes and Desserts in the Car Without a Disaster

Ever had a cake disaster in the car?
That stressful drive with a cake sliding on the back seat, or even worse — in someone’s lap 🙈
Or maybe you’ve wondered: Where’s the safest spot to put a cake, tiramisu, or dessert tray when driving?

Here’s the answer: the floor. Yep — really!

Why the Floor is the Best Spot for Cakes in the Car:

  • Flat = Safe: Car seats are slightly sloped, which makes it easy for cakes and desserts to lean, slide or tip over. The floor is flat and stable.

  • Less Movement: On a seat, even a small angle can send your baked goodies sliding, especially when turning corners or braking suddenly.

  • Less Risk in Emergencies: If you have to stop quickly, a box on the floor is far less likely to go flying compared to one on the seat. And even if you put the seatbelt on it, it will likely dent the cake or desserts if breaking suddenly.

My Go-To Transport Tips:

I used to transport all my cakes this way back when I had a cake business. No fancy tools needed just a cake box on the floor, and it worked every time and I still do it to this day.

Here’s how to keep your bakes safe in the car:

🧁 1. Use a Proper-Sized Cake Box

If you’re using a 10-inch cake box for a 6-inch cake, it’s going to slide around inside the box. Make sure the cake board fits properly not too tight, not too loose. And if you are just using a container the same rule applies don't use a big container for a small cake or only a few cupcakes.

🧁 2. Add Tea Towels for Support

For smaller cakes or trays with space around them, roll up tea towels and place them gently around the container to reduce movement. Just make sure they don’t touch the side of the cake's. I usually position them rolled a bit but still flat.

🧁 3. Make sure there isn't clutter on the floor or seats above.

Make sure there’s no loose clutter on the floor and don't put your cake on the floor don't put your handbag etc on the same seat above, if you have to break suddenly your bad may fly onto the top of the cake. If the container is flat and sturdy, this is hands-down the best spot.

Bonus Tip: Avoid Passenger Feet 🙃

This obviously only works if you’re not carrying a full car of passengers, no one wants their baked goods sharing space with shoes! So if you do have passengers you can also pop it in the boot as long as it is flat, but the boot has more room for things to slide so make sure it is secure in there and won't slide around.

In Summary:

The best way to transport cakes or desserts in the car is to place them on the floor in a well-fitting box, supported with tea towels if needed. Avoid the seat it might seem fine, but that tilt and movement can ruin your bake before you even arrive.

So next time you’re off to a party, lunch or celebration  give your goodies the safe ride they deserve! and as always if you need any help just shoot us a message we are always happy to help.
